Durban’s Knights

Bob Perfect takes an axe to the head and gets to know the Durbanites in the South African Full Contact Medieval Combat Team.

“You’ve got to be a special kind of crazy to do this.”

“What is this?” You may ask. Well, ‘this’ is full contact medieval combat. Yeah, it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s men and women strapping on some steel and going to town on each other with a variety of medieval weapons. Want to hit someone in the head with an axe? Legally? This is the sport for you.

We were surprised to find that Durban is leading the way when it comes to the sport in South Africa- our climate is not exactly conducive to wearing steel armour.  So we made the trip up to Rogue Squadron’s training grounds in Drummond and chatted to the Durban contingent of the South African team ahead of their trip to the International Medieval Combat Federation World Championship in Scotland, which you can live stream here from 10 – 13 May.

We found out what goes into swinging and making swords in 2018, why someone would want to do this, and just how well the helmets work in the video below.

  1. So rad! And even cooler to see Durbs leading SA in what appears to be quite a niche pastime…
I am interested as to how this relates to/differs from something like LARPing (Live Action Role-Playing)… my understanding of the latter is that it’s more for show and theatrical aesthetic (still very cool), while the combatants in this medieval brawlfest would appear to require some actual martial knowledge of swinging huge metal weapons…
Anyway, I’d definitely put the fitness levels of these competitors right up there with any other sportspeople.

Kiff article, with the added bonus of seeing Bob beaten about the head with a big sword.
